2 months after announcing his new album “Reincarnated” which will also feature a documentary, Snoop Dogg hits the stage at Austin’s historic Stubbs BBQ, and B-Sides was there. Drawing a crowd of all ages and from all walks of life, the sold out show this past Friday night was ripe with anticipation.
After a truly crowd rousing opening by Phranchyze, people were ready for Snoop. The subwoofers were cranked to 11, and the crowd began to cheer. Snoop appeared on stage in a rasta-colored beanie, sporting equally rasta-themed glasses, and his iconic, enormous, Snoop Dogg “ring.”
Swaying side to side he worked up the crowd, “Everybody in the house say hell yeah!” and “If you like smoking weed say F**K yeah!” For a rapper with 11 solo albums under his belt, he still retains relevance. The crowd was riddled with youth, and considering Snoop released his first album in 1993, it goes to show he’s still earning new fans.
In a continued crescendo of crowd involvement, he began one of his most well known songs “P.I.M.P” “Let me get some pimp music!” he called to his DJ and as he laid down the rhymes the whole crowd seemed to know the words.
The beats were catchy, the crowd was energized, and his stage presence was captivating. Along with a troupe of dancers for the men, and Snoop’s constant teasing of the ladies, the show was a success. Snoop Dogg continues to be a relevant icon in rap culture as well as an actor and producer. He has appeared on television and in films just about every year sine 1998, furthering his role as a public figure. Even if you think rap isn’t your thing, check him out if he comes through your town. It’ll be a good time.
