Dressing for Work: SF Summer

If you live in San Francisco you know that summer doesn’t take place during the usual June through August months. There are obviously gorgeous days to lay out in Dolores Park, but when that fog rolls in it’s time to layer up. And at work, you’d rather be bundled up on the couch than in a pencil skirt.

So, how do you prepare for a day of work when it goes from misty to cloudy to windy? Or for the unexpected sunny day? I swear by layers.

On the days when you know it’ll stay chilly, try these patterned pants from Gap which are currently on sale (and a favorite at my office in particular) topped off with either a zip-back knit or a basic tee shirt under this Babe blazer from Urban Outfitters. With a  busy pattern, you don’t need an eccentric top nor distracting shoes. Don’t forget to grab a top layer for the commute to-and-from work–my surplus jacket goes with everything as does this one with leather detail.

If it looks as though the sun will peek out at lunch, break out your summer sundress which can be layered to be San Francisco ready. Try this Zooey Deschanel chambray charmer with a pair of flats, a jacket and a summer scarf for the morning walk. If the day starts out a bit chillier, bring tights just in case. I always keep a pair in my bag. This dotted dress from Nasty Gal is not only on sale, but would look killer with a leather jacket a pair of boots. Feel free to wear a sweater underneath which is always a layer you can store away later.

Most of these can be brought to an after-work event, especially with tights or a scarf. Just because it’s foggy doesn’t mean you have to get stuck in a pair of trousers and a heavy jacket. Have fun with mix & matching with your other pieces. Don’t let the summer wind scare you from wearing your favorite pieces or playing with layers.

We’ll prepare you for the real summer months in no time.
