PREVIEW: Treasure Island Music Festival 2013

treasure island music festivalThis year at the 2013 Treasure Island Music Festival, festival attendees can expect a huge selection of bands, DJs, food, drinks, and much more! But with so many different acts to see this year, how does one know which bands to check out? That’s why B-Sides is providing you with our top 10 bands to see at the 2013 Treasure Island Music Festival.

10.) Poolside – LA disco duo band Poolside, is an act everyone at the Treasure Island Music Festival should check out! Filip Nikolic and Jeffrey Paradise created the indie pop group back in 2010. Their debut single “Do You Believe” was praised for its upbeat vocals and retro synthesizer, and according to NME it contained “supremely casual decadence.” Their debut album Pacific Standard Time released in July of 2012. Be sure to see them perform On Saturday October 19th over at the Tunnel at 3:35pm.

9.) Japandroids – For those enjoy a garage rock style band, be sure to check out the Canadian indie garage rock band known as Japandroids. Brian King (vocals, guitar) and David Prowse (vocals, drums), came together in 2006 and gained notice in 2009 with the release of their debut album Post-Nothing on Unfamiliar Records. Pitchfork Media nominated the album for ‘Best New Music.’ In 2012 they released their second album Celebration Rock onPolyvinyl Records. Be sure to catch their performance at the festival this weekend on Sunday October 20th at the Tunnel at 6:50pm.

8.) Palma Violets – Forming in 2011 is the English indie rock band known as Palma Violets. After the release of their debut single “Best of Friends,” NME awarded the single as song of the year. They recently released their debut album 180 this past year, and mainly gained their popularity through via the internet through video of their many shows. The BBC nominated the band for their Sounds of 2013 music critique poll. Be sure to check them out on Sunday October 20th at the Bridge at 1:25pm.

7.) Animal Collective – For fans of experimental rock, check out the band Animal Collective and their neo-psychedelic sound. The band originates from Baltimore, Maryland and came together back in 1999. Over the years the band has produced a total of 10 studio albums! The band consists of Avey Tare, Panda Bear, Deakin, and Geologist and also have their own record label known as Paw Tracks. Be sure to see them live on Sunday October 20th at the Bridge starting at 7:40pm.

6.) Holy Ghost! – For those who are fans of synthpop, be sure to check out Brooklyn duo Holy Ghost! The music project consists of Nick Millhiser and Alex Frankel who grew up together in the Upper West Side of New York City. They first started out as a hip hop duo known as Automato and released  only one album. Shortly after Automato disintegrated, and the two turned to more of a pop movement with Holy Ghost! They released their self-titled album in 2011 and in 2013 they released their second album called Dynamics. Be sure to catch them on Saturday October 19th at the Tunnel at 6:50pm.

5.) Real Estate – Coming from Ridgewood, New Jersey is the indie rock band known as Real Estate. The band came together in 2008, and consists of Martin Courtney (vocals, guitar), Matt Mondanile (guitar), Alex Bleeker (bass), Etienne Pierre Duguay (drums), and Jonah Maurer (keyboard, guitar). In 2009 the band’s self-titled debut album was critically acclaimed by Pitchfork Media and Metacritic. They have performed at big music festivals such as Coachella, Pitchfork Music Festival, and now they will be performing on Sunday October 20th at the Tunnel at 5:10pm at the Treasure Island 2013 Music Festival.

4.) HAIM – This year at the Treasure Island Music Festival, be sure to check out the all girl band known as HAIM. Their sound is a combination of R&B and nineties rock. They came together in 2006, but had grown up together as three sisters in a family band with their parents. As they grew older the girls were inspired by artists like Pat Benatar and Gwen Stefani to become their own all girl band. They released their debut EP Forever in 2012 and became noticed in the public eye; since then have received attention from NME, the BBC, and Fuse TV. Their recent album Days Are Gone released this past month, be sure to see them on Sunday October 20th at the Tunnel at 3:35pm.

3.) Robert Delong – In 2010 electronic musician Robert Delong from Bothell, Washington began venturing into House, Electronica, and EDM music. He has released two album including, his EP Global Concepts (2012) and Just Movement (2013). His single “Global Concepts” reached number 33 on Billboard Alternative Songs Chart upon its release. Although he originally started out as drumming for indie rock bands, Delong began to incorporate electronic sounds into his music, as well as using video game peripherals to modify them. Wired Magazine has described his music as a combination of alternative rock, dance, and electronic music that is upbeat but interesting. Be sure to see Robert Delong perform on Saturday October 19th at 2pm at the Tunnel.

2.) STRFKR – Originally from Portland, Oregan is the electronica band known as STRFKR. The band came together in 2007 and consists of band members Joshua Hodges (vocals, keyboard, guitar, drums), Shawn Glassford (bass, keyboard, drums), Keil Corcoran (keyboard, drums, vocals), and Patrick Morris (guitar, keyboard, vocals). Their start began when their 2008 song “Rawnald Gregory Erickson the Second” appeared in an ad for Target in 2009. In 2010 they signed with Polyvinyl Records and released a two track EP and a full length album in March of 2011. In February of 2013 they released their fourth studio album Miracle Mile. Be sure to check out their live performance on Sunday October 20th at the Bridge at 4:20pm.

1.) Beck – The number one act no one should miss out on at Treasure Island this weekend, is Beck! Beck began his musical career back in the 1990s and since then has released a total of 10 studio albums and has incorporated many different styles into his music including: alternative rock, country, hip hop, funk, folk, soul, and psychedelia. He has been praised by critics as being one of the most creative and idiosyncratic musicians of the 1990s and 2000s, and is a four time platinum artist. Be sure to see Beck perform live on Sunday October 20th at 9:20pm at the Bridge.
