ALBUM REVIEW: Supermodel by Foster the People

foster-the-people-e28093-supermodelPop-sensation Foster the People rode a meteoric rise to fame with their insanely catchy tune “Pumped Up Kicks”. Blending their unmistakable mix of 80’s synth, global pop and 60’s influence, the trio is back with the sophomore album “Supermodel” which is one the most highly anticipated albums of the year.

Debut single “Coming of Age” has already been blowing up the airwaves but how does the rest of the album measure up? “Supermodel” serves a continuation of 2011’s “Torches” but instead of making an album that is a note-for-note copy, as is expected for a follow-up album, the band explores their sound with eclectic beats and decidedly darker lyrics. The album’s theme and concept had been described as “angry” by frontman Mark Foster as he expressed his frustration about indidivudal self-worth derived from pop culture and social media. Tracks like “Are You What you Want to Be?” and “Coming of Age” drifts dreamily through with a euphoric-pop vibe that dominates the band’s sound, offering the fun, dancy vibe you have come to know from Foster The People’s music – but the album isn’t all lazy summer haze and dreamy warbles. The band tackles some heavier material in songs like “Pseudologia Fantastica”, which deals with a PTSD-suffering war veteran’s return home to his family; and “A Beginner’s Guide To Destroying The Moon’” muses about the sinister realm of capitalism.

“Supermodel” will be available for purchase March 18th. The album is available for preorder via iTunes and the band’s website. Catch Foster the People on tour for most of this year but be sure to get your tickets early because most dates have already sold out.
