LIVE REVIEW: Slightly Stoopid – Red Rocks, Colorado

Summer in Colorado is filled with numerous reggae acts coming through but this year’s lineup is topped off with the two biggest shows,  Reggae on The Rocks on August 22nd and Slightly Stoopid on August 1st.  While the Reggae on the Rocks lineup has some really big names on it like Sublime with Rome and Pepper, this past weekend’s Everything is Awesome Tour featuring Slightly Stoopid with Stick Figure and The dirty Heads definitely gave it some competition in terms of star power.

The completely  sold out show had the entire amphitheater filled from side to side and top to bottom. The crowd was made up of a very wide variety of age groups and races,  which is something unique the blending of all of these different sounds creates.  It makes it so a crowd is not limited to one demographic, but a huge sea of different characters and personalities all coming together to vibe along to beautiful music together

The Dirty Heads

When the Dirty heads hit the stage, the crowd erupted into cheers and greeted them with a huge welcome.  The five member band consist of Duddy B (Vocals/Guitar), Dirty J (Vocals),  Jon Olazabal (Percussion),  Matt Ochoa (Drums), and David Foral (Bass). A lot of the songs they played were from their latest album Sounds of Change however, they did play songs from their whole discography. “Silence” had a huge crowd reaction and the live version was filled with tons of energy.  The Dirty Heads create a foundation of rock and reggae in their music and then sprinkle in some up-tempo hip-hop to add a couple more layers to their sound.  They played a mix of their slower songs as well as some high energy crowd pumping songs.  Some other notable songs they played were ” Sloths Revenge” and ” Sounds of Change”, while ” Medusa” garnered a strong crowd response from the pure passion Dirty J delivered.  The highlight of the set was the last song which was a bass boosted version of their hit “My Sweet Summer” as the crowd reacted loudly and was still chanting for more after the set was over.

After a short intermission, Slightly Stoopid hit the stage to an already well warmed up crowd.   The seven member band not only included the normal bass, guitar, drums, and vocal, but also both a horns section  and a keyboard section.  One of the first songs they decided to play was one of their most popular songs “2 AM”, which the crowd responded very well too.  A lot of their songs are jam songs in which there isn’t much lyrics and the many layers of  instrumentation take the stage.  The crowd was definitely alive and jamming right along with the band.  Some of the best crowd reactions came from when the band gave its guitar and horns section their own solos.

A little while into the show the lead singer gave a shout-out to Colorado and said they had been touring here for 15 years and it just keeps getting better. Just after the band broke into a freestyle ska song that was about Colorado and Red Rocks, which was really cool to hear.  After playing a few songs from their new album Meanwhile back at the lab, the band took it back a little with another older hit called “Collie Man”.

The set was  outstanding and lasted nearly two hours ending with a very special guest appearance from legendary Reggae artist Don Carlos.  Carlos performed 3 songs with Slightly Stoopid as the cover band and ended the show with a final respect to one of the original creators  of this music genre that has grown so vast over the years.
