ALBUM REVIEW: Beach Slang – A Loud Bash of Teenage Feelings

beach-slang-2Beach Slang is a punk band from, the City of Brotherly Love, Philadelphia, PA. The band brings an energetic mix of punk rock ruckus, melodic dissonance, and anti-pop. They have strung together a list of EP’s and compilations with one full length record, 2015’s The Things We Do to Find People Who Feel Like Us, to critical acclaim. The band has regrouped,  after what seemed like a continuous touring cycle, to record their follow up A Loud Bash of Teenage Feelings. The record follows in the footsteps of it predecessor with smart, loud, and aggressive pop-hooks, driving guitars, with the fingerprints of nostalgia all over it.

The record wastes little time out of the gate with album opener “Future Mixtape For The Art Kids” with James Alex’s distorted voice sounding like he swallowed a box of nails. “Atom Bomb” drives that point home as the song explodes through 2 minutes of love. Close your eyes during “Spin the Dial”, “Art Damage” and “Hot Tramps” and you would swear it was a heavier and more distorted version of The Replacements. “Young Hearts”, and “The Perfect High” are those rare pop-love-punk songs that aren’t low points on the record and actually add more, rather than detract from the overall feeling of the album.

beach-slangA Loud Bash of Teenage Feelings is just a great record from start to finish. Ultimately, it’s a record to get lost in. A road trip that you can sing along to in the car at top volume with a significant other at top speed. A record you can spin at a party on the beach to dance to around the fire. A record to reconnect the listener with their teenage self, and the record as the soundtrack for a new batch of memories.
