The Outside Lands Music and Arts Festival is celebrating its tenth anniversary this weekend August 11-13 in Golden Gate Park in San Francisco. Along with plenty of food, beer, and wine, the musical line up stretches across many categories as well. The headliners, include The Who, Gorillaz, Lorde, A Tribe Called Quest, Alt-J, and even Metallica, but there are plenty of lesser known artists who deserve some love over the weekend too.
FRIDAY
Rag ‘N’ Bone Man – Rory Charles Graham caught some attention for his single “Human” in 2016, his booming, soulful voice is powerful and could easily fool the listener that they were hearing a famed and age artist from the soul genre. Catch him 3:00 – 3:50 pm at the Sutro stage.
Little Dragon – Always seeming to be on the verge of super stardom, the Swedish electronic band has only seen moderate success in the popular culture. The band has seemingly mastered dream pop with their heavy synth and frontwoman Yukimi Nagado’s calming, dreamy vocals. 4:45 – 5:45 pm at the Lands End stage
Saturday
Mondo Cozmo – Josh Ostrander has had a good year on the Billboard charts, his folky pop rock tune “Shine” has been stuck in many heads since January. His lyrics are real and easy to relate to, keeping the music simple and acoustic. 1:25 – 2:05 pm on the Panhandle stage.
Real Estate – Releasing their fourth full album this year the American rock band from New Jersey continues serving up straight forward space rock tracks with surfy guitars and plenty of reverb. 2:30 – 3:20 pm at the Sutro stage.
The Lemon Twigs – With only one album under their belts it’s very obvious what the American pop rock band’s goal is; channel 1960s and ’70s popular rock music and present it in contemporary context. The Beach Boys and Supertramp come to mind upon listening. 3:00 – 3:40 pm at the Panhandle stage.
Thundercat – The electronic jazz fusion bass master has an extensive list of collaborations including Kendrick Lamar, Flying Lotus, and Erykah Badu to name a few, but his three solo albums deserve just as much attention. Don’t miss the groovy goodness at the Twin Peaks stage 3:45 – 4:35 pm
Kaytranada – The DJ and producer has over forty remixes and over a dozen projects, but has only recently released his first full length album recently. If you’re digging the Thundercat set just stick around the Twin Peaks stage 5:20 – 6:20 pm.
Foxygen – Releasing their fifth studio album this year, equipped with a forty piece orchestra and notable collaborations, the straight up indie pop rock duo is sure to throw down an energetic and memorable set. Rockin’ the Panhandle stage 6:20 – 7:00 pm.
Sunday
Maggie Rogers – Catching some attention from Pharrell Williams with her song “Alaska”, the singer songwriter has a unique approach to pop music. The mellow, straight forward song writing will suit a Sunday afternoon perfectly. 2:30 – 3:20 pm at the Sutro stage.
Schoolboy Q – Member of the hip-hop group Black Hippy, along with Ab-soul, Jay Rock, and Kendrick Lamar, the L.A. rapper is no stranger to the stage. Expect haunting beats and thought provoking lyrics presented in a distinct poetic fashion. 6:40 – 7:40 at the Twin Peaks stage.
