X Games celebrated its 30th anniversary in Salt Lake City, Utah during the weekend, June 27-29 at the Utah State Fairpark, highlighted by exciting competitions in Skateboard, Moto X and BMX. With temperatures in the low to mid 90s throughout the weekend, the athletes were able to not only endure but excelled in the summer heat of Salt Lake City. Fans were also treated to great music performances by alternative rock band Sublime and seminal electronic artist deadmau5, which capped off the first two days of memorable action sports. This year’s competitions featured lots of young talent that are primed to carry on the legacy built by the legends like Tony Hawk, Bob Burnquist, Bucky Lasek and Andy McDonald who were seen in attendance.
Finland’s 14-year-old Heili Sirvio claimed her first gold in Women’s Skateboard Park, while 16-year-old Gui Khury dominated Men’s Skateboard Vert, becoming the most decorated teen in X Games history. Australia’s Arisa Trew claimed a gold medal for Women’s Best Trick to surpass Fabiola da Silva for most summer X Games gold medals. Colby Raha soared to a world-record 52 feet 6 inches in Moto X QuarterPipe High Air, while Ema Kawakami from Japan who was the youngest athlete to ever compete in the X Games at 10-years-old last year, captured bronze in Men’s Skateboard Vert for his first medal at the competition.
Lots of history was made throughout the weekend as Garrett Reynolds won the silver medal for BMX Street to set the record for the most X Games medals by a BMX athlete. Men’s Skateboard Vert featured 16-year-old Gui Khury, who won gold with a 91.33 score, becoming the most decorated teenager in X Games history with his eighth gold and 14th total medal. He also won gold and 15th overall medal dominating Men’s Skateboard Vert Best Trick, while Arisa Trew made history in Women’s Skateboard Vert Best Trick, landing the first-ever kickflip body varial 540 in competition for her eighth gold. Ryan Williams landed the first-ever BMX triple backflip to dirt, a historic moment, though he missed the podium in BMX Park Best Trick, where Kevin Peraza won gold.
