The third studio album ‘Hyperyouth’ from Joey Valence & Brae was released in July to much anticipation. The fast-rising, genre-defying alt/hip-hop duo from Pennsylvania have created a growing and loyal fanbase over the past few years while establishing themselves as an exciting live act to witness in-person.
‘Hyperyouth’ contains many of the hallmarks that Joey Valence & Brae (JVB) are known for, hard-hitting raps, unique samples and reflective lyrics. Fully produced in Valence’s State College, PA bedroom, ‘Hyperyouth’ weaves in themes of “growing up without getting old” as the pair referenced. “I think at the age we’re at right now, and we’re not even like old. It’s just once you get to your mid-twenties, you look in the mirror and you’re like, I’m not young anymore,” Valence shared, “We just wanted to get a bit more honest and tell people more about ourselves and I think we want to continue to do that moving forward.”
In the three years since joining forces, Joey Valence & Brae have garnered both critical and fan approval for their energetic live shows. The pair have performed at numerous festivals that many have regarded as a standout performance, including their late-night appearance at Bonnaroo, their set at Governor’s Ball, Lollapalooza and Electric Castle in Transylvania amongst others.
Joey Valence & Brae spoke with B-Sides host Pete Mar about their ‘friends first’ approach towards creating music and their working relationship. They talk about the universal feeling of maintaining a youthful outlook on life as one gets older and how it is encapsulated on their latest album ‘Hyperyouth’ and more.
