Los Angeles-based artist mehro released ‘Weirdthrob’ in early September after months of build-up and smattering of single releases. Of the album’s title, mehro shared, “Weirdthrob really describes how I feel about myself. It just resonated with me as somebody who’s always felt like a phony, insecure, or unworthy of things. Seeing people be so strange and yet so beloved was something I always resonated with.”
‘Weirdthrob’ follows up ‘trauma lullabies’ that was released last year and garnered praise for its moody melodies and raw lyricism. With both projects, as well as other previous releases, mehro has carved out a musical identity that’s grounded in vulnerability and connection. “It’s sort of how if you love somebody enough that it’s shocking that you can continue to love them and love them more as time goes on. How is that possible? You’re just one being.” mehro shared, “How do I continue to love you and love you even more as time goes on? And I guess that’s sort of the same relationship that I’m lucky enough to have with music.”
mehro’s musical journey started early in life as music as a staple during childhood but really thought about it seriously after watching the Johnny Cash biopic ‘Walk The Line’ and learning “Folsom Prison Blues”. Exploding into the scene with “perfume” in 2020, it was “Chance With You” that followed in 2021 that exposed mehro to a huge audience, which has has accumulated over 118 million streams.
mehro spoke with B-Sides host Pete Mar about making ‘weirdthrob’ , how the subject matter is left for the listener’s interpretation, listening to Beethoven and more.
