Emerging artist Mikayla Geier just released her new EP, ‘HOT POT!’, October 29th to much anticipation. The new material is more upbeat and is inspired by Geier’s exploration into new styles of dance like voguing, especially heard in the EP’s standout single, “piano in the sky”.
“HOT POT! to me was really inspired by this concept of unity and wanting to bring people together,” Geier stated, “I think for me, the way that I felt most together with people in my entire life is through food, especially in my culture, and then also through dance. I feel like dance is such an unspoken language that’s very universal, which is really cool. So it really inspired me to write a bunch of uptempo songs. I really wanted music that you could dance to like at the club or with your friends, whatever.”
The singer-songwriter from Vancouver started to dance at two years old, taking after her older sister and would embark on a journey of training and performances, eventually attending an elite Russian ballet academy. Geier would ultimately find her voice and inspiration to go full-time in music as an artist while attending business school. While her first EP, ‘here we go again…’ released last year, was softer and reflected her background in ballet, Geier expanded into heels dancing and voguing as of late. The style of dance would inspire much of the music on ‘HOT POT!’ as she stated, “I think it’s kind of like a fun ode to, you know, hot pot is, like, one of my favorite things to eat. I also like that it sounds like hot pop, and we’re eating, figuratively and literally, and I’m happy. And I think there’s a lot of like, joy and fun and unseriousness on this project that I’ve been really excited to capture.”
Mikaya Geier spoke with B-Sides host Pete Mar prior to her debut show in Los Angeles and handful of upcoming shows including her spring dates with Marina. She talks about how her early admiration of her older sister’s dancing inspired her passion for ballet dancing, crafting her latest EP ‘Hot Pot’ and more.
