Needless to say, the quarantine era of 2020-21 spawned numerous musical artists of a variety of genres, especially in the rock space. Emerging from Southern California’s surf and garage rock scene, Sun Room formed in 2020 when vocalist-guitarist Luke Asgian began crafting what would become the band’s core sound. Guitarist Ashton Minnich and bassist Max Pinamonti would later join the band to round out the trio as it is today. Going viral on TikTok with “Sol del Sur” helped get Sun Room much attention that scored them gigs across the U.S., festival slots (like Austin City Limits), and prominent tours with Louis Tomlinson of One Direction and Irish band Inhaler. With their music featured in the hit Netflix series ‘Outer Banks’, Sun Room has been on a wave of releasing EPs, including their latest, ‘Ritual of Chaos’ that was released earlier this year. The band took a broader approach to expand their sonics and lyrical depth by focusing on writing what excites them rather than adhering to a specific genre. “Sometimes I’m just shocked that we were ever able to have this as a job,” Asgian shared, “I feel like we’re just writing songs to try to write the best songs we can and not trying to write certain types of songs.” Standout tracks like “Jackknife” and “On Fire” are raucous and evoke early 00s garage indie rock from The Strokes and Arctic Monkeys from that era. Sunroom is continues to record and write while preparing for opening gigs for August that will lead up to their own headline tour in the fall.
Sun Room spoke with B-Sides host Pete Mar about growing as a band and exploring new sounds, their latest EP ‘Ritual of Chaos’, thoughts on AI, touring with Louis Tomlinson and more. The band also performed two songs acoustic for us! “The Night’s Not Over” and “Oslo, Paris, L.A.”!
