Interview: SKATERS

SKATERS formed in New York City back in 2012 and have been taking on the country with songs from their first EP Schemers and their debut album Manhattan, which was released in February of this year.  Having been on the road for most of this year and continuing that tour into the fall with an upcoming show in San Francisco on September 27, these guys know how to have a good time.  Here’s a little preview of the sense of humor you can expect from leader singer Michael Cummings at a show near you.

On your Facebook page, you define yourselves as plasma punk.  How do you define plasma punk?

Oh that was just some bullshit that we put up on Facebook. Someone described our band as plasma punk. My own interpretation is some kinda space punk, kinda like intergalactic.

You’ve been on the road for most of the year, so as people have become more familiar with your music, which songs have people reacted to the most that’s surprised you?

“I Think I Wanna Dance” but I don’t know how people react to that one a lot…another one people connect with lyrically is “Miss Teen Massachusetts.”

What are some of your must have items while on tour?

It’s different for every member, but some things like, GPS, credit card, bag of weed and your guitar. You can pretty much get everything else on the way.

What band(s) (dead or alive) would be your dream lineup and why?

I’d say The Beastie Boys opening for The Clash opening for The Beatles opening for The Replacements.  I don’t know why, just seems hilarious The Beatles open for The Replacements.

If SKATERS was a hip-hop act, what would your name be and what subject matter would you rap about?

I’d be DJ Cuckoo and all the other guys would be rapping about manners, real PG stuff, like what you do after school and when to do your homework, and respecting your parents.

If you guys hadn’t started this band, what would you all be doing right now?

I’d be mopping floors, pretty sure Noah would be bartending and Josh would probably be hanging out doing nothing really. Dan would probably be selling drugs or something, I’m not sure.

Last question, if you guys decided to switch up instruments for a night, who would play what instrument?

I think I’d play drums ‘cause I think I’m like the best drummer…I think Dan would have to sing lead vocals…Noah would wanna play guitar and probably Dan would take his shirt off.

Make sure to catch SKATERS at their San Francisco show on September 27 or at another city near you!
