Singer/songwriter mxmtoon has been professionally making music since she was a teenager, garnering a loyal and large fanbase online for her ukulele covers on YouTube before eventually creating her own music and becoming a professional musician. Years later, mxmtoon has a huge international fanbase that not only relate to her music but also to her as a personality.
She released her interpretation of the Chet Baker classic, “I Fall In Love Too Easily” this past Valentine’s Day, as part of a 15-track collection of various artists paying tribute to one of jazz’s most enduring and influential artists. It’s the San Francisco Bay Area native’s first new music of 2025 since the release of her third studio album, ‘liminal space’, which was released last year. The album marked a new chapter for mxmtoon, who grappled with going through her early 20s after having recently moved to New York City just before the pandemic in early 2020. Speaking about the barrage of insecurities and emotions in dealing with life’s changes, faith and self-realization, mxmtoon stated that she felt “suspended in a transitory landscape that oftentimes felt endless,” she shared. “It’s easy to feel trapped in something you barely understand, and life has thrown an onslaught of questions towards me that I can only respond with, “I have no idea how to answer this.” So, suspended in the unknown I wrote these songs. I tried to unravel how I’ve chosen to fulfill the roles I’ve been given in my own life, and at times how I’ve failed to keep up with them. I got the wonderful opportunity to create this record with an all female team of producers, writers, engineers, and more which made the process of reckoning with these decisions through my art that much more impactful. liminal space is an album for people struggling to understand agency, who bathe in the bittersweet, and lose themselves wandering their own endless hallway with no ending.” mxmtoon recently wrapped up her headlining North American tour in support of the new music and is currently on tour throughout Europe.
mxmtoon spoke with B-Sides host Pete Mar about how feeling lost at 23 years old and living in New York City helped inspire her latest album, ‘Liminal Space’. She talks about the strengths and nuances of her relationship with her parents, moving to Nashville and more.
