Rocket’s debut album, ‘R is for Rocket,’ dropped this year and has captivated a growing audience with its melodic, yet raw sound. Drawing heavy inspiration from 90s alternative legends like The Smashing Pumpkins, Nirvana, and Juliana Hatfield amongst others, the band crafts songs they themselves “would want to listen to.” Members Althia, Baron, Desi, and Cooper reveal their varied introductions to these formative sounds, from parental guidance to high school teachers, all contributing to a unique sonic blend that finds an unexpected affinity for Bay Area rap music.
“It’s just been truly magical to play a show and see what the songs mean to people and the fact that they know the words and are just really excited about us as a band.”
The band describes their approach to live performances as a balance between “perfectionism” and spontaneous “stretching.” While much of their set is meticulously rehearsed, the closing track, “R is for Rocket,” offers a unique opportunity for improvisation, extending up to fifteen minutes depending on the night. This dynamic jam, particularly between bassist Althia and drummer Cooper, relies on unspoken trust and cues, creating a truly organic and rad experience. Baron also candidly shared her journey from initial vocal hesitancy to finding confidence through consistent touring, acknowledging that while she’s improved, she still feels there’s “so much more I could be doing.”
Rocket spoke with B-Sides host Pete Mar about their debut album’s warm reception, the band’s diverse musical influences, the unique dynamics of their live performances and more.
