VIDEO: INTERVIEW – Solya Talks Texas Pride, The Flaming Lips And Influence on Debut ‘Queen of Texas’

Indie artist Solya is poised to redefine the landscape with her debut album, ‘Queen of Texas’ which was released in March. The Texas-born artist discovered her unique musical vision at an early age, blending an indie sensibility with distinct Southern grit and an empowering narrative woven through its sonic tapestry.

“My vision for ‘Queen of Texas’ is to craft a sound that embodies both the raw, untamed spirit of the South and the undeniable strength of a regal, modern woman.”

Solya’s creative process for ‘Queen of Texas’ is deeply personal, focusing on meticulous soundscapes and lyrical depth. Challenging conventional genre boundaries, Solya created a compelling narrative that explores themes of identity, resilience, and sovereignty, set against the classic 50s Buddy Holly-esque vibes in a cinematic landscape. Solya shared, “Queen of Texas is a deeply personal album with themes of self-acceptance and choosing solitude over toxicity, even though it is something I’ve always feared,” shares Solya. “Musically, I wanted to create cinematic, heartfelt songs with elements of country, indie rock, and Americana, in combination with ethereal synthesizers. The album was written over the span of 4 months and recorded entirely on analog equipment in just 10 days.”

Solya spoke with B-Sides host Pete Mar about growing up in West Texas, the pride of the community she has there and admiration of older artists like The Flaming Lips. She speaks about self-acceptance and loneliness that are explored on her debut ‘Queen of Texas’ and more.
