The project ‘Simpleton’ explores themes of introspection and understated observation, a deliberate shift towards a more direct lyrical approach. Yot Club, the moniker for Ryan Kaiser, emphasized a production philosophy centered on analog warmth, utilizing vintage synthesizers and a distinct lo-fi drum sound to achieve a textured, yet uncluttered, sonic aesthetic. The 13-track LP explores how modern comforts—gated communities, curated social feeds, and routine lifestyles—erode empathy and allow people to ignore harsh realities. Created largely in isolation with strict discipline (one song every two weeks), the album features many standouts like the Weezer-esque “Projecting,” tender “Alien,” dynamic “Make It Easy,” bossa nova-tinged “Romanticization,” and tension-filled “Okay.” Kaiser describes the album as “attempting optimism in a world that feels increasingly hard to be optimistic about,” celebrating human resilience amid soulless modernity. The “Make It Easy” video, shot on camcorder against a green screen, visualizes time’s passage before finding calm by the ocean.
Yot Club spoke with B-Sides host Pete Mar about how society’s increased Isolation and curated online feeds informed his new album ‘Simpleton’. He talks about growing up in Mississippi, moving around the country, getting new perspectives on life and more.
