The Beatles made history when they appeared on The Ed Sullivan Show 50 years ago on February 9th, 1964! In celebration of the Liverpool band that changed the world with their music; CBS hosted a memorable and entertaining tribute on the anniversary night of their first Ed Sullivan Show appearance. The tribute was taped shortly after The Grammy’s last weekend and featured the two remaining Beatles, Ringo Starr and Sir Paul McCartney. The show featured many amazing covers of The Beatles’ songs from over the years, including Katy Perry covering McCartney’s “Yesterday,” Ed Sheeran with “In My Life,” and “Hey Bulldog” by David Grohl. During the show there were interviews with Paul, Ringo, and David Letterman, who has been hosting the Late Show in the Ed Sullivan studio since 1993; as well as interviews with Ed Sullivan’s’ staff who worked that night, talking about the crowded streets and the overpowering cries and screams from the many young women in the audience. Short biographies of each of The Beatles were included during the show, speaking about their childhood and how the band originally came together as teenagers who had a love for guitar, drums, and rock music. The tribute ended with a performance that united Ringo Starr and Paul McCartney on stage together since The Beatles. The two performed “A Little Help From My Friends” and “Hey Jude,” leaving the crowd and the world feeling inspired once again.
