On Radar: The Shelters

The Shelters roared onto the scene in 2015 bringing with them a Southern California sound that has been sorely missed in recent years. The band quickly issued The Shelters EP in October 2015 featuring a signature sound of jangly guitars, pop-hooks, and sneered sass catching the attention of none other than Tom Petty. Petty was so enamored that he worked directly with the band allowing them to use his personal home studio.

The result of that experience is chronicled on the band’s raucous self-titled debut, The Shelters. Co-produced by Petty, first single “Rebel Heart” offers the listener a taste of that California sound with a tinge of rockabilly for good flavor. The twin guitars of Chase Simpson and Josh Jove provide a high-energy and Beatlesque melting of the walls. Sebastian Harris (Drums), and newcomer Jacob Pilot (Bass), keep the beat steady, driving the melody in a similar Tom Petty fashion.

The sharp yet intimate vibe of the band, as well as tours alongside Gary Clark Jr., The Struts, and The Wild Feathers has garnered The Shelters a significant following. A positive journey backwards in search of a true rock n’ roll sound has propelled the band forward hopefully bringing with them more music from a fresh perspective.

Their full-length debut, The Shelters, is due out June 12^th via Warner Brothers Records. The Shelters are touring with Mudcrutch in May and June with stops at Cincinnati’s Bunbury Festival, and Austin’s Austin City Limits Festival. In October.
