The first day of Outside Lands 2016 was met with great anticipation by music fans who attended the event at Golden Gate Park in San Francisco from all over the country. The typical chilly August weather didn’t stop the crowd from enjoying great music as early performers Marian Hill impressed many at the Twin Peaks stage while Ra Ra Riot got people dancing to both their new material and earlier standbys on the main stage. The crowds started filling up throughout the day with many eager to see headliners, the recently reunited LCD Soundsystem later in the night.
There were other attractions as strong as the music in the Barbary tent, which featured various comedy acts, as well as Gastro Magic, which combined musicians with culinary masters. A highlight of the day at Gastro Magic included Ra Ra Riot performing as their alter-ego cover band, A Humiliating Kick In The Crotch, who performed as a Police cover-band dressed in wigs while cooking demonstrations were going on that even included a fish getting filleted.
80s legends Duran Duran held their own and then some during their late afternoon set. The band was just as energetic and on engaging as the younger acts on the bill. The crowd that was filled with both young and old music fans danced to the classics that included “Hungry Like The Wolf”, “Rio” and “Wild Boys”.
Other standouts included the newcomer Låpsley, who had the crowd swaying and crooning along to her songs right before Canadian artist, Grimes, brought her brand of synth-art-pop to the Twin Peaks stage.
What would become a popular destination throughout the weekend, 219 Boys and Pillow Talk kept people shielded from the chilly weather and dancing in a dome located in the Polo Field.
Shortly before LCD Soundsystem took the stage, Big Boi of Big Grams/OutKast, performed an impromptu set at a small stage. Grabbing a microphone and launching into “Bombs Over Baghdad”, a huge crowd immediately gravitated to the stage.
