PHOTO REVIEW: Green Day – San Francisco, CA 04/02/2024

Green Day played a special hometown show to a sold-out crowd at The Fillmore in San Francisco, CA Tuesday night that commemorated many occasions. The East Bay band performed their brand new album ‘Saviors’ in its entirety and then followed it up by playing their iconic LP ‘American Idiot’, the latter having been released twenty years ago this year in September. Right from the start of their set, the mosh pit up front kicked into gear from the new album’s title track to “The American Dream”, “Look Ma, No Brains!” and “Bobby Sox”. There wasn’t the usual banter from frontman Billie Joe Armstrong, who pretty much kept the music flowing leading a few “hey-oh”s every now and then. The crowd got more raucous as the opening chords of “American Idiot” were played and thereafter when the band went into the epic “Jesus of Suburbia” and “Holiday”. Fists were pumping throughout the set as many went crowd-surfing to songs like “St. Jimmy” and “Letterbomb”. In somewhat of a surprise for a Green Day show, the band came out for the encore to perform “Minority”, as opposed to what had become standard at a typical Green Day show in ending with “Good Riddance”. The band was tight, energetic and had the crowd of 1100+ strong singing and dancing along to what will be remembered as a legendary night by an iconic local band.
