LIVE REVIEW: Isabel LaRosa + Ari Abdul – Dallas, TX 04/03/2024

On the road for the GOD’S WATCHING tour, alternative pop singer-songwriter Isabel LaRosa put on a powerful and fiery sold-out show at the House of Blues in Dallas, Texas on April 3, 2024. Following the success of her hit single “I’m Yours” in 2022, LaRosa formed a name for herself through her dark distinctive music videos which she self-directs and produces alongside her brother, Thomas. For her debut EP I’m Watching You (2022), released under RCA Records and Slumbo Labs, LaRosa compiled three music videos into a short film. Her second EP You Fear the God That Loves You (2023) arrived shortly before the singer headlined Nessa Barrett’s Young Forever Tour.

Still energetic from Thomas LaRosa and Ari Abdul‘s performance, the crowd broke out into a collective deafening scream at the younger LaRosa’s entrance. Wearing all black and platform boots, Isabel opened with “HAUNTED” and “Therapy” with every lyric screamed right back at her. LaRosa often interacted with fans as she danced around stage as her brother played his heart out on the guitar. With few breaks between songs, LaRosa smoothly transitioned from a cover of Katy Perry’s “I Kissed a Girl” into her angsty dark-pop single “eyes don’t lie.” Things began to slow down as LaRosa covered Lana Del Rey’s famous “Brooklyn Baby”, which led to the audience swaying with their phone flashlights. Grunge, faster paced songs “older” and “i’m yours” captivated the audience as Isabel belted the lyrics and Thomas returned to stage with guitar in hand. Isabel LaRosa’s dedication to both her fans and her music radiated the entire night, leaving fans and LaRosa buzzing after the show exciting for the singer’s future.

Kicking off the show was Isabel’s older brother Thomas LaRosa, known for cowriting and producing his sister’s music. Thomas immediately woke up the waiting crowd with his passionate guitar and thrashing around on the stage. Loud cheers rang out as Thomas sang his most recent single “Dangerous” and “Good Girl” (2023), both songs influenced by alternative bedroom alt-pop. Shortly before exiting the stage, he performed a cover of Hozier’s iconic “Take Me To Church” under red lights which perfectly fit the atmosphere.

Fellow alternative-pop singer-songwriter Ari Abdul opened for her friends, Isabel and Thomas. The setlist included Abdul’s various grunge hits from the last two years, beginning with “You” (2023), “Taste” (2022), and “BURY YOU” (2023). Paired with the red lighting and adoring crowd, Abdul’s raspy vocals vibrated throughout the small venue. She briefly paused between songs to spotlight her recently bought Buc-ee’s shirt, an essential purchase for a first visit to Texas. Continuing the show, she went into “SINNERS,” “HUSH,” and “DFHMPU,” her latest single which had the crowd roaring and jumping. Near the end of her set, Abdul jumped in the crowd before closing with her hit debut “BABYDOLL.” Both Abdul and Thomas LaRosa entertained the crowd with their passion and pure connection with the fans.
