VIDEO: INTERVIEW – Diva Smith Says The 1975 Dominated Her Tumblr, Talks Finding Confidence in Songwriting and Music

Emerging pop artist Diva Smith’s upbeat ballads explore topics of feminism, mental health, self-reflection, and addiction. On her debut single, “Better in Heaven,” Smith touched on first heartbreaks and healing with a bubbly modern pop beat. Her lyrics transform on her newest single, “I Can See in the Dark,” with a more playful, bold atmosphere. “It’s kind of therapy for me, creating it, but listening to all of the music I grew up listening to and discovered that was such a form of therapy for me,” the singer stated. “To hear people singing these words and these lyrics that I was, I felt those exact same feelings.”

Diva Smith spoke with B-Sides host Pete Mar about her love of The 1975, how taking psychology classes at NYU helped her find confidence and inspiration to pursue music. She talks about the viral video of performing “Mad World” with her father, Curt Smith of Tears for Fears, future plans and more.
