Does it smell like induction for Nirvana? From hip-hop and grunge to blues and progressive rock, the Rock Hall of Fame released the 16 nominees for the Class of 2014. The grunge rockers are up for consideration for the first time, along with other first-time nominees Hall & Oates, Peter Gabriel, Linda Ronstadt, and Yes.
The list of nominees also includes Kiss, the Replacements, the Meters, Cat Stevens, LL Cool J, N.W.A, Deep Purple, Chic, Link Wray, the Zombies, and the Paul Butterfield Blues Band.
From now until December 10th, fans can vote online for the nominees they want to see inducted, and the top five will have a fan’s ballot that will count as one ballot in the voting. For consideration this year, artists or bands need to have released their first single or album in 1988 or earlier.
Nirvana is the only act this year to make their way on the ballot in its first year of eligibility. Their cover of “Love Buzz” by Shocking Blue was their first single, hitting stores in late 1988.
Other nominees have been up for consideration numerous times with no luck. With seven prior nominations, the disco dynamos Chic has never made the cut. But guitarist Nile Rodgers has had a list of accomplishments, including his recent collaboration with Daft Punk on their summer hit “Get Lucky.”
Last year’s class included Rush, Randy Newman, Public Enemy, Donna Summer, and Quincy Jones. The 29th Annual Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony will be held in April in New York City, but the location and ticket sale information will be released at a later date. Like in previous years, HBO will tape the ceremony and have it air in May.
