VIDEO INTERVIEW: Cautious Clay Ignores Trends, Fickle Music Industry To Focus on Long-Term Success, Talks Debut LP

We’ve been big fans of singer, songwriter, producer, and multi-instrumentalist Cautious Clay since his breakout single “Cold War”. The last we spoke with the Cleveland-born, New York-based singer, aka Josh Karpeh, when he was gearing up for the release of his 2019 EP ‘Table of Context. Two years later, he’s finally released his debut album ‘Deadpan Love’, a stunning record filled with rich melodies and sophisticated lyricism.

“‘Deadpan Love’ is something that I have inside me; the way I cope with the worst of what the world has to offer,” he says. “So much of life and relationships are spent in gray areas—we mistreat the people we love and we’re friendly with the people we hate. This is an album about those complexities in friendship, investigating toxic behavior and self-worth.”

It’s remarkable that Clay is only just releasing his debut, considering the acclaim and success he’s garnered since the release of ‘Cold War’. His music has been featured on the soundtracks of Issa Rae’s Insecure and Olivia Wilde’s Booksmart and has even written songs with John Mayer and John Legend. Clay has also collaborated with some of the hottest rising artists of today such as Remi Wolf and Still Woozy. One thing’s for sure: Cautious Clay is here to stay.

We’re so excited to have Cautious Clay back on the show to talk about the making of ‘Deadpan Love’ and more!
