Lightning in a Bottle returns again this Memorial Day weekend with a broad range of electronic music while incorporating some notable cross-genre activities and events. Taking place from May 20–24 at Buena Vista Lake near Bakersfield, CA, the music lineup is strong with headliners Australian synth-pop duo Empire of the Sun, Sara Landry and Mau P. The musical headliners are supported by a wealth of amazing artists including, Chase & Status, Mochakk, Tinashe, Lee Burridge, Hot Since 82, Rodriguez Jr., Jayda G, Of The Trees, Daily Bread, ALLEYCVT, Overmono, Conducta, Nia Archives, DJ HEARTSTRING, Barry Can’t Swim, Maceo Plex, DJ Trixie Mattel, and Avalon Emerson.
Distinguishing itself from other festivals, Lightning in a Bottle has numerous activities that allow attendees to participate in personal enrichment beyond the music stages. The Compass serves as the festival’s central learning and cultural hub, featuring over 150 talks, workshops, and seminars led by thinkers, visionaries, and creators. Programming explores themes such as Visioning the Future, Raving & Relating, Wisdom & Ritual, and Somatic Exploration. Attendees can engage with topics including climate issues, psychedelic ecology, indigenous wisdom, sexuality, the future of rave culture, harm reduction, neuroscience, sound healing, breathwork, poetry rituals, and queer embodiment.Daily yoga, movement, and meditation sessions are led by experienced practitioners, offering opportunities to balance the high-energy festival environment with grounded physical and mental practices. The ArtClave functions as an interactive creative space, hosting hands-on art classes, workshops in traditional crafts and techniques, and guided art tours. The Learning Kitchen provides educational culinary experiences with demonstrations and classes focused on sustainable, health-conscious, and ancient-to-modern food traditions.
Throughout the weekend, the Lightning in a Paintcan project brings together more than 50 live muralists who transform blank canvases into large-scale artworks in real time, culminating in an art walk and silent auction.The grounds themselves act as an expansive interactive gallery filled with large-scale installations and themed environments. Returning favorites include the Grand Artique, a detailed mock frontier town that hosts spontaneous performances and community activities.
