VIDEO: INTERVIEW – Brigitte Calls Me Baby Reflect on ‘Irreversible’ and Authentic Evolution

Chicago-based alt-rock band Brigitte Calls Me Baby released their sophomore album, ‘Irreversible’ in March, showing a growing maturity and confidence in the new material. Capturing the emotional highs and lows of the human experience that range from heartbreak and infatuation to existential anxiety and generational cycles of depression, the new songs are incredibly relatable while sonically catchy.

“The worst thing you can do is to go against what you naturally have. And people can sniff that out. And that’s true of your voice. It’s true of the music. It’s true of the fashion. Everything we do, it’s really us.”

Formed in 2022, Brigitte Calls Me Baby is comprised of frontman Wes Leavins, guitarist Jack Fluegel, bassist Devin Wessels, and drummer Jeremy Benshish. The band approached the recording process with brief four-hour sessions at a home studio to capture an immediacy and spontaneity that enabled them to think out of the box. With tracks like “Slumber Party,” “There Always,” and “I Danced With Another Love in My Dream”, ‘Irreversible’ is a solid release of songs that explore a darkwave aesthetic with jangling guitars and heavy synths. Reflecting on the songwriting process and his creative evolution from their debut record, Leavins stated:“Our first album taught me that you’ve got to reach as far down into your soul as possible and be willing to show something real and raw to the world, and with this album that felt even easier and more natural.” While the band drew many comparisons to the likes of Morrissey, The Smiths and 80s new wave, they leaned into it with confidence on the new record. Leavins shared, “The worst thing you can do is to go against what you naturally have. And people can sniff that out. And that’s true of your voice. It’s true of the music. It’s true of the fashion. Everything we do, it’s really us.”

Brigitte Calls Me Baby members Devon and Wes speak with B-Sides host Pete Mar about making their latest album ‘Irreversible’, how many songs came organically and were written with ease. They spoke about being confident in their sound despite comparisons to throwback artists and more.
